Klav Collections.. How it all started
Some of my most vivid memories of growing up with my grand mother (Patti) was shopping with her for clothes and jewelry in various roadside shops in the famous (& very crowded) T.Nagar (a famous street shopping market) area of Chennai, India. Perhaps these shopping expeditions with my Patti was the inception of my love for Indian jewelry and accessories.
In October of 2023, I founded Klav Collections, specializing in handmade & eco-friendly terracotta jewelry. All of the jewelry you see are exquisitely hand made by inspiring women artisans, and carefully curated by yours truly. It is a venture to channel my passion for jewelry & share some of my favorite pieces with you all. We offer beautiful necklace sets, earrings, bangles, clutches, purses, hair accessories & more!

The Eternal Craft: A History & Origin of Terracotta
Terracotta, a name derived from the Latin words terra (“earth”) and cotta (“baked”), is one of humanity’s oldest and most soulful mediums. At its heart, it is a tribute to the elements—born from natural clay found in ancient riverbeds, shaped by hand, and transformed by fire.
A Global Legacy: From the Indus to the Acropolis
The story of terracotta is a global one, spanning millennia and proving that true beauty is timeless:
The Indus Valley (3000 – 1500 B.C.): In the archaeological sites of Mohenjo-Daro, excavators discovered exquisite figurines of deities and animals. These finds prove the incredible durability of the medium; though thousands of years old, the artistry remains as vivid today as the day it was fired.
Ancient Greece & The Acropolis: Terracotta was foundational to Mediterranean culture. Excavations from the Acropolis era (dating back to 200 B.C. and earlier) have unearthed stunning terracotta pots, architectural ornaments, and the famous Tanagra figurines. These artifacts, found preserved in the heart of Athens, highlight how terracotta was used to capture both the divine and the elegance of everyday Greek life.
The Americas & West Africa: From the intricate portrait vessels of the Moche civilization in Peru to the striking, expressive sculptures of the Nok culture in Nigeria (500 B.C.), terracotta has been the primary medium for preserving the human face and form across the globe.
The Imperial Legacy of China: Perhaps the most breathtaking use of the medium is the Terracotta Army of the First Emperor of China (210 B.C.). Over 8,000 life-sized soldiers were crafted from local clay, a testament to the material’s strength and the immense detail achievable by master craftsmen.

Today, this art form continues to thrive through the hands of master artisans. From the intricate terracotta temples of West Bengal, India, to modern boutique studios, the skill is passed down through generations.
